After discussions I make a site visit for photographs and sketches. I then draw a rough lay-out and revised rough lay-outs detailing the area, highlighting particular features and adding additional images of interest. It can be an interesting challenge to balance everything I want to depict within the confines of the paper whilst keeping it clear and legible. The final map is then completed in watercolour. Depending on the size and requirements lettering can be painted on by hand or added digitally.
Wandering around an area and discovering it’s unique characteristics; the geography, history, architecture, flora and fauna is a great pleasure. It becomes an intimate portrait of a place.
The large map above is of a beautiful resort Kamalaya in Thailand….here are some more I have completed…most a little closer to home but equally enthralling projects.
